MINI-TASKS

The students presenting their findings the class on Friday, March 27th:

JONATHAN, MARIO, DEANNAH, ARIANNA, PAIGE

Mini-Task 3:       Hardware diet

–> SPECIAL NOTE: IF YOU GAVE ME YOUR DEVICE IN CLASS, THEN YOUR DIET WEEK BEGINS IMMEDIATELY, 3/13 – 3/20, SO START KEEPING YOUR DIARY AND BLOGGING YOUR REACTIONS ASAP.  I WILL BRING YOUR DEVICES BACK TO CLASS NEXT FRIDAY.

This *could* be the toughest task of the semester…

Can you spend a week without your phone?  Or how about just using your phone as a … phone?  (That includes no texting!)
Or…how about spending a week without a beloved digital device, like your iPad?
Or…can you use your laptop with 3G/4G or wifi disabled?  (So that you only connect to the internet from home – no mobile connectivity.)  For another challenge, how about restricting your away-from-home internet usage just to the computer labs at school?

So, you have a couple of options:  1.)  Choose the device and put it away.  Far away.  That would mean you do not physically touch your cell/iPad/laptop for one week.   2.)  Choose the device and disable the internet connection on it.  (NOTE: I prefer option 1.)

You choose the ONE device to do without, and your task is to stick to it for an entire week.  In this case, the week will be Sunday March 15th – Saturday March 21st.

As with Task 2, your daily blog commentary should detail the impact of this diet on your life.  Are you feeling excluded?  Are you finding yourself more productive?  Less?  When you are frustrated by what you’ve given up, it’s a good opportunity to reflect on how dependent you are on something that literally did not exist a decade ago – or perhaps didn’t function in the ways in which you are using it.  Is this truly something you cannot live without?  How does life change with this diet?

Once again, after your week is complete, five of you will be presenting your findings and analysis in front of the entire class.  All of you, regardless of whether or not you’re presenting, are responsible for a 2 to 4 page paper (NOT a blog entry) that makes significant observations regarding your media usage.  The paper will be due by the start of class on FRIDAY, March 27th.  LATE PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
